What I Did: I read from the British Council website on Present Tenses

What I Learnt:
The present tenses in English are used to talk about the present, to talk about the future and to talk about the past when we are telling a story in spoken English or when we are summarising a book, film, play etc. We can use these forms to talk about the present and the future.

What I did:
I researched on "active voice" and "passive voice". I came across this webpage explaining what they are, how we can use them and how to convert between the two.

What I learned:
I learnt that when using the active voice, the subject has to be carrying out the verb's action.
E.g. Tim was creating explosions.

However, when using passive voice, the subject is not acting but instead being acted upon by the verb.
E.g. The explosion was caused by Tim.

One can easily change a statement from the active voice form to one with a passive voice by swapping around the order of the words.
E.g. (Object)
        [Subject]
        {Verb}

Active voice would be: [Subject]{Verb}(Object)
Whereas passive voice would be: (Object){Verb}[Subject]

What i did: I took a quiz on Active vs Passive Voice so as to find out if i really know the difference between them.

What i have learned:  Active voice means that the subject does or did or will do the following action expressed in the verb for example: The joggers train together every Saturday. The sentence  is active sentence as they would do it every Saturday.

Passive voice means that the subject does not do the action expressed in the verb for example: The apple was eaten by Sarah. The apple did not did the action of eating hence its a passive sentence.

What I did: I went online to look for a mini quiz on active and passive voice.

What I learn: I learnt that using active voice is very straight forward. In an active voice, the subject is doing the action. e.g. I love food. Passive voice would be saying it the other way around. e.g. Food is loved by me.

What I did: I played the game.

What I learnt: I learnt that active voice is where the subject is in front of the sentance while passive voice is the opposite. 

For example, 

Sue changed the flat tire. (active)
The flat tire was changed by Sue. (passive)

What I did : I read up on Active voice vs Passive voice and how to change them from active to passive voice.

What I learnt : Active voice is usually from a first person context and passive voice is usually from a third person context. Active voice is clear and concise for the reader whereas Passive voice can cloud your sentence.




Another example would be :

Cats eat Fishes ( Active )
Fishes are eaten by Cats ( Passive )

What I did: I went online to search for a practice on the active and passive voice.

What I learnt: I learnt that active voice is used in a past tense while the passive voice is used is the past perfect tense. Passive voice occurs only when the subject is acting on a verb while active voice occurs when a subject is acted on by the passive voice.
Examples of active voice:

They were interviewing John for the job position.
The teacher told Harry not to talk in class.

Examples of passive voice:

John was being interviewed for the job.
You would have been notified of your ranking if you had won in the first place.

What I did: I read about Active and Passive Voice.

What I Learnt: I learnt that in a sentence using active voice, the subject performs the action expressed in the verb. Also, using active voice makes the meaning clear, keeps the sentence from being too wordy. Using Passive voice, however, the subject is acted upon; he or she receives the action expressed by the verb.

What I did : I did an online test on active and passive voice

What I learnt:

I learnt that for active voice, the subject does an action that is described as the verb. The sentence structure of an active voice sentence,  for example : "I crushed a tin can", where the subject "I" acts upon the verb "crush"

However, in passive voice, the subject of the sentence is acted upon by some other agent. The sentence now becomes "The tin can was crushed by me". "tin can" becomes the subject, and the verb remains "crush".

What I learned:

I learned about what active voice and passive voice meant. 

Active Voice: 
Most english sentences with an action verb, the action performed by the subject is denoted by the verb. When a subject acts upon the verb in a sentence and this sentences are called active voice.
Example of Active Voice:
The man must have eaten five hamburgers
The man which is the subject is doing the eating which is the verb. 

Passive Voice: 
You are able to change the normal word order of many active sentences, those with a direct object. This will make the subject no longer active but it is being acted upon by the verb or passive. Subject and verb relation is changed in passive voice. Subject that is being acted upon or is passive are called passive voice. 
Example of Passive Voice:
Five hamburgers must have been eaten by the man. 
Hamburgers which is the subject are being eaten which is the verb.

What I did: I read from this article the difference of active and passive voice and when to use passive and active voices.

What I learnt: 
In active sentences, the doer of the action is called the subject, while the one experiencing the action is the object. Two examples of active sentences are "The professor teaches the students." and "John washes the dishes." In this two examples, "the professor" and "John" are the subjects, "teaches" and "washes" are the verbs and "the students" and "the dishes" are the objects of the sentences. Active voices are commonly used in all forms of writing.

In passive sentences, the receiver of the action is the subject while the doer of the action is the object. Two examples of passive sentences are "The students are taught by the professor." and "The dishes are washed by John." In this two examples, "the students" and "the dishes" are the subjects, "are taught" and "are washed" are the verbs and "by the professor" and "by John" are the objects of the sentences. The passive voice is often used when the author wants to place emphasis on the subject, instead of the doer of the action. Although passive is not commonly used in writing, the passive voice is used more in mystery and crime writing and reportage, whereby the doer of the action is not or cannot be known.

Passive voice is used less often. In passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb (eg. Fish are eaten by cats.)

Structure of passive voice:
subject + auxiliary verb (be) + main verb (past participle)
The main verb is always in its past participle form.

Usage of passive voice:
-Make the active object more important
-Do not know the active subject

What I did: 
I read an article on Active and Passive voice to learn what is it's definition and differences.

What I learned:
The active voice is the normal voice, the voice that we use most of the time.
(Eg. Cat eats fish)
The passive voice is less usual. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb.
(Eg. Fish are eaten by cats)

Passive forms are made up of a verb with a past participle, indirect objects can also be used as the subject of a passive verb and it is also possible to use phrasal verbs in the passive voice.

What I did:
I looked up an article to find out the meanings and differences of active and passive voice.

What I learnt:
I learnt that while active voice is used when a subject does an action that acts upon another object, passive voice is used when an object is acted upon by another object. Also, certain sentences which do not have a direct object cannot be changed from active to passive voices. Active voices flow smoother and can be understood easier, however, passive voices are better when the one doing the action is unknown, or if emphasizing the object being acted upon is needed.

What i learnt : I have learnt the difference in passive voice and active voice. Active voice is the meaning where someone does something (example : john took the toys) while Passive voice means the object receives the action of the verb (example : the toys are being taken by john). I also learnt the importance of passive voice and active voice. Passive voice is used to make the object more important or if we don't know the object (example : I got kicked ) . Finally i took a test to test my understanding, i manage to get one wrong only.

Because of it’s abnormally high academic standards, Lincoln is a great high school.

Supporting PEEL Paragraph:

(Point) Lincoln’s graduation requirements are very high. (Evidence 1) In science classes, students are required to cure “at least one major disease” prior to completing their Junior Year. (Evaluation 1) This is a much higher standard than in other PPS high schools, where typically a student is only expected be able to vaguely describe an episode of “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” (Evidence 2) English teachers expect students to have a critical analysis of the entire works of Shakespeare, Joyce, Neruda, or Rowling published in a scholarly journal. (Evaluation 2) Two years ago, one student successfully published a critical analysis of Lady Gaga lyrics, and only earned a C in the course. (Evidence 3) Perhaps most difficult are Lincoln’s requirements to complete the field of study in History. (Evaluation 3) To successfully earn their History credits, Lincoln students must  build a time machine and actually become a famous historical figure: Karl Marx-Cardinal class of 2010! (Link to paper topic) These are just three of the many examples of how Lincoln’s graduation requirements make it a school with high academic standards.

What I did : I read this article about a fifteen year old dancer that twirled for four hours straight for a performance.

What I learnt : The performance was criticised as being cruel, to have a girl spinning for four hours straight without stopping. However, the girl, Wei Cai Qi, was said to describe the spinning as a method of spiritual mediation, and a way to challenge her limits. I think that while this performance is a little too extreme, and should not be encouraged as not everyone can take the nauseous feeling.
