What I did: I looked at the news article.

What I learned: Falling birth rates cause a higher working to retired ratio, increasing the number of old people in the society. With more old people, some elders may have to give up retirement to continue working, just to survive. Rising expectancies add to the problem as there would be more people above 60.

What I did : I read up on an article regarding a 33 year old man who was convicted of drug-related crime to score 5 A1s and to be top O'Level student this year.

What I learned : Even though this is a short article, there is a lesson to be learned from it. Even when you think you have failed terribly and have society looking down at you, you have the choice of picking yourself up and find a new goal in life. This 33 year old man who has been serving 5 and half years in prison has scored the top O 'Levels results from a prison school. If he can, why can't we do the same?

I read up about the recent news article about a student passing away after a P.E. lesson

What I Learned :

There was an increase in the amount of such cases and this case was the second in a week. He also reportedly told his P.E. teacher about him feeling unwell, before collapsing. This really reflects badly upon the teacher as he did not seem to have done anything about the boy’s medical condition. Moreover, the boy was also quite irresponsible as he knew that he had asthma and yet continued to attend P.E. lesson, pushing himself past his limit.

What I did: I went to search for an article and chanced upon this article regarding Singapore's Police Force attempting to gain more power over Little India, especially after the riots.

What I learnt: I have learned that the Little India riots that happened on the 8th of December have resulted in many inconveniences for the Singapore Police Force. Also, it has led them to have a tighter grip around Little India and to pay more special attention to it. The government has taken action and has proposed a temporary law specially for Little India regarding liquor sales. This tells me that rioting will only lead to more complications and disturbances in a country.

What I learned: I've learnt that a train disruption can cause many commuters their precious time, in this case, up to 19 000 commuters have been affected by the disruption says SMRT. This train service disruption comes a few days after another disruption on the 11 of January 2014. This also comes in, just a few days after the Public Transport Council announced a fare hike of four to six cents per journey.

What I did:
I decided to read online news articles to catch up on current affairs. I came across this news article which talks about the arrest of two kidnappers who kidnapped the mother of a Sheng Song executive.

What I learned:
I learnt that a kidnapping case has not happened in a long time, however, just because it has not happened in a long time does not mean that it will never happen, and we should be vigilante and careful. Also, we can rely on the police force to help us whenever crimes have been committed, to help bring criminals to justice.

Committing crimes is a very serious offense, and we must never stoop so low as to commit these acts. The Singapore laws are also very strict in that whoever who commits these acts are punished severely.

What I did : I read an article about how Singapore police wants powers to handle the Little India riots.

What I learnt :

Police are seeking a new temporary law to be put in place in Little India, to enforce alcohol restrictions and movement of persons. Under this bill, law enforcement officers are able to inspect and interview any persons who enter the special zone for alcohol or prohibited items. Officers will also be able to exclude or ban persons from entering the special zone for specified durations if his presence or actions are likely to threaten public order. There will be more time for the Ministry to take in account recommendations from the COI.

I think that this law would be a solution to prevent another riot form happening, but it may also draw flak from other foreigners living in Singapore. They may view this as another point of discontent, being a foreigner in Singapore.

What i learned:  The economist and forbes columnist, Jesse Colombo claimed that Singapore economy is facing a ballooning of credit bubbles which is seen also in Iceland in the 2000s. He also claimed that Singapore is being falsely perceived as a safe-haven economy that will eventually crash. However MAS strongly denied that any such things are happening and arguing that the government's property cooling measures have worked to dampen sky-high property prices and reiterating the strength of the government's finances and a solid banking sector.

There is much more to debate on as both sides are strongly against with each others points.

It made me feel that his creativity of his music had really impacted the generation today. Unfortunately, music today has been becoming more dull and similar to each other. For a song to get to the top, it is always either the weirdest or messed up in someway or another. What I learned: I learned that the ties between the United States and Turkey are of utmost importance to both countries and they cannot afford to lose the ties that they have. The were police raids in Turkey to detain the corrupted officials and police officers. The corruption has damaged Turkey financially and political, hence causing pressure and tension to build up within the country. In an attempt to ease the tension, the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogen pressurised three cabinet members to resign. However, the Prime Minister, under pressure, pointed fingers, saying it was a foreign plot to discredit the Turkish government. However, the United States government do not want to let the Prime Minister of Turkey continue pointing fingers at others. What I did
I read up more on the anti-government protestors in the Thailand capital, Bangkok. The article was written by Channel News Asia.

What I learned
I learned that the protestors in Bangkok vowed their fight to topple the government despite a bomb attack on their rally which killed one, left 37 injured and 11 remaining in the hospital. I think that this protest is started because the current government and the protestors both have different political views on how to run the country and the intention of this protest is to bring down the government. From the article, demonstrators have occupied major intersections in the Capital since monday and have dubbed this the "Bangkok shutdown”. I think that this is somewhat true because during a protest, the country might suffer economically and socially. Shops and malls in the Capital might have to be closed during the protest and the tourism industry of Bangkok might take a fall financially. The relationship between the people and the government might be damaged by this. I also feel that the protest is very dangerous as innocent people might get hurt too. In conclusion, I think that something must be done as soon as possible to rectify this problem in the country before the situation becomes worst.

What I did : I watched the video in the link, and read through the news, also understood why they want to protest.

What I learnt :

Boycott - withdraw from commercial or social relations (a country, organization or person)
Rural - in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the town.
Military coup - The sudden overthrow of a government by a usually small group of persons in or previously in positions of authority.

Summary
The protest is caused by the protestors and they are unhappy with the Prime Minister now , Yingluck Shinawatra. The protest cause explosions which caused 28 to be injured. He said the first explosion took place about 30 meters from Suthep Thaugsuban, the leader of the protest group, and generated a lot of smoke. The government has deployed about 20,000 security personnel throughout the city. The protestors wants to have an election and it will be held on 2 February.

Though i thought it was easy, I did some mistake that I feel that is not forgivable. I learn where to use the 6W and 1H in a text and also past and present tenses. I feel this will make sure that in my composition, there would not be more of such mistakes.

What I did:
Because I was writing another article for the social media, knowing my level of grammar, I was somewhat not confident of it. This is about the new livery of SMRT liveries.
What I learnt:
Actually, what I thought my grammar was was not what I expected for this! I did not know my grammar was still acceptable. This is a very useful tool for checking for any grammar mistakes before posting them up on another communication tool. Now, after I have learnt that the internet has such tools, this tells me that I have to treasure them to improve my standard of English.

What I did:
I read up a recent news story about an auction that sold a permit to kill an aggressive rhino that could pose a threat to younger rhinos.

What I learned:
Words that I did not understand:
Earmarked - To designate funds or resources to a particular purpose

Summary:
A safari club in Texas auctioned off a permit to kill a rhino that was claimed to be a threat to younger rhinos, they said that they were protecting the species by doing this. Many people of the public were against it and even sent death threats. One felt that it showed how much an American would give to hunt rhinos.

What I did:
I decided to check out a news article that seemed pretty serious. I found and article which reports about a man having a hole in his stomach after drinking a very spicy soup.

What I learned:
notoriously - known widely and usually unfavorably
gastrointestinal - relating to the stomach and the intestines

I also learnt that mala soups could possibly burn the stomach wall if it is too spicy. It is made of Sichuan and chilli pepper and a local spice, and causes a numbing sensation and is served with varying degrees of spiciness. Restaurants have started to replace the natural ingredients with cheaper, synthetic ones which mirror the spice.

The soup is a dangerous spice and we have to be careful when drinking these soups, and we have to be careful when making this soup and not make it too spicy. In my opinion, restaurants should put up caution signs to show that it could burn a hole so that customers could be careful.

What I did
I went to an english grammar website to do some grammar practices. I did some practices on english tenses (present progressive).

What I learned
I have learned that my english grammar is at an average level. From this, I have learned that I would need to continue to improve on my english grammar skills because I made silly mistakes in the test I took and some of the questions I was not sure of how to do it. After, the test, I checked the answers on the questions I got wrong so that I would clear any misunderstandings or doubts I had when I did the test and so that I would not make the same mistake again. I plan to do more practices on my grammar so that I would be better and I would be apply my grammar skills to essay writing too.
